Embark on a unique journey to a hidden gem of Indonesia. From  the volcanoes of Berastagi to the spectacular Lake Toba, North Sumatra has many amazing sights not to be missed. 

Lake Toba, one of Sumatra main attractions, is among the most idyllic spots in Southeast Asia, lined with pine trees and scenic mountains slopes. Stay on Samosir Island where you can experience some of the fascinating Batak Toba culture.Lake Toba is the largest Volcanic Lake in the world and was the site of a massive supervolcanic eruption that occurred 69,000 to 77,000 years ago.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Samosir Island

Arrive at KNO airport, meet and greet then start driving to Parapat – a famous mountain and lake resort on the east shore of the immense volcanic Toba Lake.  En route, we will pass several small towns and some vast views of rubber and palm oil plantations and paddy rice terraces. Stopover at local snack shop, Paten to stretch our legs. On arrival in Parapat, we will board the local public ferry to Samosir Island, an island in the middle of Toba Lake. Dinner will be served at the hotel.

Day 2 - Samosir Island Excursion

After breakfast, we start our day by exploring Samosir Island. We will visit the Tomb of King Sidabutar and Batak Toba Village at Tomok. Then make a stop at Ambarita, a traditional village with ancient megalithic furniture in front of the traditional houses and also visit the Village of Simanindo to watch a folk dance performance of the Batak Toba people. We end our day by enjoying traditional dishes at our hotel.

Day 3 - Taman Simalem & Brastagi

After breakfast start we board the ferry to Parapat heading to our destination Brastagi via the Ring Road of Toba Lake. En route we’ll pass some pine tree plantations, experience the magnificent scenery of Lake Toba and a few fertile vegetable and fruit farms. visit the ancient King’s Palace of Simalungun at Pematang Purba. We also visit the slender Sipiso-piso Waterfall which drops from hundreds of meters high into Lake Toba. Lunch will be served Taman Simalem Resort with view overlooking Lake Toba.  After lunch we will depart for Brastagi, a highland town home of 2 volcanoes: Sinabung and Sibayak. Check in hotel.

Day 4 - Medan

After breakfast, we will explore the fruit market of Brastagi before heading to Medan through the lush tropical rain forest of Sumatera. Along the way, we will stop at Taman Alam Lumbini, to visit a Buddhist temple based on the Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar. On arrival in Medan, city tour to Vihara Gunung Timur (the temple of East Mountain), a Chinese temple with its unique characteristics and Maimoon Palace, home to the old Deli Sultanate and Tjong A Fie Mansion. We end our day by having dinner at our hotel.

Day 5 - Orangutans

Morning after breakfast drive to north-westward for about 3 hours to Bohorok, orang utan center. En route passing through several small towns followed by vast view of rubber and oil palm plantations with some countryside landscape. Stop to see palm oil plantation from outside. If it’s in season you can stop to see local “rambutan” and cacao garden, also stop to see local market in Kuala. Arrive in Bohorok, lunch break. After lunch start on a 3 hrs jungle trekking where you can see the semi or wild Orangutans. Steep, slopes and dense vegetation will bring you to the excitement of the Sumatra rainforest. Here you have the opportunity to see several species of indigenous flora and fauna. If you are lucky you may encounter Orang Utan, leaf monkey, macaque, gibbons, siamang and abundant bird life. Walkers must be fit and have suitable, large profile shoes. Trekking pace will be adjusted with clients's stamina. After the trek, back to Medan via plantation road in 3 hrs road. Dinner at hotel in Medan.

Day 6 - Depart Medan

After breakfast we will head to Medan KNO airport for our flight home. Sadly it is time for us to leave Toba Lake Expedition and board our overnight flight back home.

Notes

  • Sightings of orang utans is not guaranteed! In fruit season for example, orang utans might not come because there are plenty of food in the jungle.
  • In Bohorok camera / handycam will be charged extra when visiting the orang utan site. Camera Fees are Rp. 50.000/piece & handycams are Rp. 150.000/piece
    This fee is paid directly to the Gunung Leuser National Park officials on the spot. Clients must ask for official receipt.
  • Additional trekking activities not mentioned is subject to payment on the spot.
