Area: The total area of Dubai is approximately 2,428 sq miles.

History: The seven independent emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah came together to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the year 1971. While Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the UAE, Dubai remains its commercial centre.

Location: Dubai is located on the Eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, in the South West corner of the Arabian Gulf.

Economy: The UAE is one of the world's wealthiest countries, with a GDP of US $54 billion (2000), and has the third-largest proven oil reserves in the world. While oil and gas production form its foundation, Dubai is increasingly broadening its economic activity to include: real estate, tourism, trading and manufacturing.

Cultural mix: Owing to the resources and foreign enterprises located in Dubai, more than 80% of the population are expatriates from across the globe and the city is home to almost 200 nationalities.

  • Long, wide sandy beach, lapped by the tranquil waters of the Arabian Gulf on your doorstep.
  • The Palm Jumeirah - Eighth wonder of the world (5 minutes' drive along Jumeirah Road.)
  • Wild Wadi - Dubai's largest water theme park, offering the tallest and fastest water rides outside North America. Attractions include Flood River, Lazy River Wave Pool and others that guarantee a great time for all (10 minutes' drive along Jumeirah Beach Road).
  • Golf Courses - Emirates, Creek and Jebel Ali golf courses. Take a taxi to your chosen course; the nearest is Emirates Golf Course (10 minutes' drive along Sheikh Zayed Road).
  • Mall of the Emirates - Biggest entertainment, shopping and leisure complex in the Middle East, which also includes a large indoor ski slope. Open September 2005 (10 minutes' drive along Sheikh Zayed Road).
  • Downtown Dubai, Souks, Museums and Creek - The historical focal point of Dubai. A must for any visitor is a stroll by the Creek, where dhows still load and unload their cargo's as they have done since Dubai first started as a trading port. The traditional way to cross the Creek from the Deira side to Bur Dubai is by abra and at the same time you will have some great views. The Dubai Museum is housed in the Al-Fahidi Fort, the city's oldest building (25 minutes' drive).
