Sawadika

After months of waiting and weeks of sleep count-down, my Thailand holiday finally has last week. So Saturday night I was already all packed and ready to go "for Monday's departure. As it is, but always go for a holiday, I close a eye Sunday night and lie awake the hole night next to the the clock. My taxi was one of my colleagues had booked for me, arrived promptly at 05:00 and so at 5:30 I was going to Busan International Airport for my flight to Bangkok.

I never knew what a wetland is in Bangkok, from the top it is only water where you look, rice lands and floating markets. We flown over hundreds of small islands between Bangkok and Phuket, which is a picturesque from the top.

Everything went as planned and so I stand waiting for our company's transfer agent with my SA-travel companions to Phuket airport. And what shock the weather turn out. Everyone warns you in advance about how hot and humid in Thailand, it feels completely like Phuket elephants are sitting on your chest and his ass was not light ... It's very distressed! But not even the heat could not stop our excitement. Was nice to see so the Kakamiete after nearly eight months.

On the way to our hotel, Burasari Resort in Patong Beach (Phuket) in our air-conditioned "bus (it's funny, taxis and shuttle buses have big posters everywhere," AIR-CON "... now we know why ;) Anso remarked that they drive same side of the road as in SA . With all my gossip, I have not even noticed it ;) might have felt strange just felt normal again but I do not even noticed it. Many people have asked me if East / Asia looks everywhere the same, Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, is moss everywhere Oriental ... but I can not help to wonder if everywhere in our country or in Africa look the same, just because it's not everywhere western? There is sure a lot of similarities between Korea and Thailand, what faith, culture, traditions and even some parts of the cities, but also as many differences. What struck me most in Phuket is that there are not very many skyscrapers or sky-high flats, to Korea, where it is the norm. Thailand is also a much poorer country than Korea.

Thus we arrive so 45 minutes later at our hotel, so 200 meters from the beach, to all our expectations. Luxury rooms, lovely pools, pool bars, lounges, delicious buffet breakfast and lots of friendly staff. We were at the beach to watch the glorious sunset and enjoyed our-self in the little in the waves (or rather wavelets). Patong beach is truly beautiful, much undeveloped and natural. And every Thai stumble upon you in some kind of same, same but different, with something they want sell. One thing that people realize from the beginning is to make peace with, is the fact that everything in this street markets fake is ... the hawkers are not ashamed to admit to it. So, here you can find anything for yourself, from the 'newest' Apple ipod touch, Canon Camera, Billabong T-shirts to Diesel strops for next to nothing 'buy as long as you its not the real thing had hoped. After the first ten stalls you will also soon discovered that every second one basically sell the same things as well, one often heard, "same, same but different" ... here you can also buy the very latest films, with a cover , the lot for R15. They will also clearly understand that you can bargain with everything you buy. At first, it is terribly funny, once the seller has plucked those calculators are gone - they do not just leave, I think a men seldom runs away with empty hands. Later, it feels as if one can scream, but you have to look calm and mind your own business or they will force things on to you;) There is also an art bargain shopping ... Before you begin, your mind was be made up, how much is the maximum that you want to pay for the item (R1 = 4 baht, so you divides everything by 4 to get the rand amount) then after the seller offered sky high prices, you just say, "no, no, no, too much. "Then they asked," okay, how much you got? "then you just start much lower than the price you would pay, if you want to go on (because they always try to learn) till you get it for your price and they then kick you down as an ass ... restive if the seller would not give head, then you start as slowly run up and say that you will buy it somewhere else before you then five yards away, they call you back and settle for the price you are willing to pay for maybe R10 or R20 more. A man must also counted but only realistically stay with the price you offer. I have quite a lot of good buys for R50.

If you are looking for a quieter shopping experience at Patong beach is "Jungceylon" a better option. It is a shopping mall with hundreds of shops and several international brands - here you can just not bargain for the price, but at least you can make up your own mind before you buy, and they sell no Fakes;)

The next morning when it is time for our half day city tour in Phuket. The travel agency, that all transfers and city tours where been conducted to had a minibus, we where collect at the hotel. We shared the minibus for another couple of South Africa. We stopped at several viewpoints where one had the most beautiful view of Phuket, we had a Thai temple visit - where a lot of Budda-worshipers worship their god. They believe at that Budda for their 'good fortune' and will daily buy him food and flowers for good luck. One has also seen throughout the city where people brings to the Budda statues bottles juices of water, snacks and flowers for happiness ... Then we went to an indoor Thai market, which was lovely air-con. According to our tour guide, it is the cheapest market in Phuket, one gets anything from handbags, clothing, jewelry, umbrellas, souvenirs, towels, real Thai his scarves, tablecloths, pillowcases lot for an apple and an onion ... we had a wonderful shopping moment! There is also a whole bunch of strange fruits in Thailand, Rambutan like berries, it looks like a litchi with a lot of hair and tasted like a cross between a litchi and a likwart. The guava-soup in Thailand is green instead of pink which we used to. However, I was disappointed in the flavor of the fruit - it's not so nice sweet and fragrant as the fruit in Korea or South Africa, and yet a man thought that the fruit right here would be great.

After our shopping spree, we went to the largest jewelry store in the world, yet something I did not know who would have thought that the biggest jewelry store is in Phuket. Here, we where at one of the workshops and then took-ed to a sale - where we visit cameras store, (I think this is every woman's dream! It huge. If you do not go there with something in mind its not specific better, you have limited finances, otherwise it may take days or you could be bankrupt by half the house! The variety was amazing, gold, silver, platinum, pearls, diamonds, gemstones, rings, earrings, pendants , pendants, watches, name-board you name it! I made my own for a necklace acquired, unplanned;) We went back to the hotel, where we met the representative of our travel agency to brief us with our tours itinerary.

After a wheel & deal we decided on para-sailing, elephant trekking, white water rafting and the Phuket Fantasy show. So we went down the beach for para-sailing, after the "seller" then would not come-down with the price as given to us, we at least bargain for a beer included - for the nerves:) I decided that I rather go first, because I was afraid that my courage would fail me if I do not go first ... I would lie if I said that it was not scary for the time, but when we took off all the nerves disappeared and I could just enjoy it ... it was a wonderful experience and not too high or not scary. Definitely a must for everyone. It is also not difficult, I had a rasta-man who sat behind me, you ran a few meters meters before to take off, then you just enjoy the view, the landing is not so bad.

That evening we took a tuk-tuk (Its small buses in all colors of the rainbow in abundance Patong - for the stuntmen there is anywhere scooters to rent , but everyone drive like they want to and the less experience travellers, the tuk-tuk maybe a safer option) by Bangla road, or rather Sodom and Gomorrah. Bangla Road is known as the nightlife street in Phuket. Here one must, however be very open minded - because it's not the nightlife we use to. You will find anything from lady-boys to ping pong shows and budgies sitting in a bird-cage;) it was quite Shocking and a eye opener to see what someone will do just for a few bug's. I could not help to wonder how desperate a person must be willing to earn money like this. No wonder the Tsunami hit Phuket ... as spoken of the Tsunami, there are signs everywhere along the beach to show how high the waves were, it is almost unthinkable.

Wednesday is the day for our adventure tour and our tour guide collect us early-morning at the hotel. The whitewater rafting and elephant trekking is an hour and a half drive to the mainland in Phuket, then we at least had time to take a nap ... the other lot was exhausted,  mainly because Cathay Pacific is probably not the most comfortable airline to fly when long distances are involved, they apparently had to sit up straight, as the chairs could not retaliate - be warned! I think a man should about two weeks before a trip to Thailand have started putting in your extra hours of sleep because it is a luxury in Thailand.

We stopped at the "monkey cave", where we could feed the monkeys. Anso was then the only brave person one amongst us, as soon as they see the saw the bananas, they charge at you graping the banana out of your hand with force. They warn in advance that you must leave your wallet with everything in the bus, when the monkeys get a good grip to something they grap and climb into the trees.

Then we went to the white water rafting, we were then divided into groups and I and Anso shared a boat with two Australians and now the rafters. The Australians where a honeymoon couple, and the poor souls cling to each rocking ... they have not look like the adventurous type;) It was delicious and tasty with tough times. They have a open dam for the river to get fuller when people come for river rafting.

After rafting, they took us to the starting point for the elephant trekking. We had a 5 km route through the forest - it was an incredible experience. The elephant is much smaller than our African elephants. It's also a little dizzy and at times a man must hold-on as the large creatures walk on the stone ridges and climb onto rocks. I think a man could a exhausted after a longer trip. After the elephants we went to a crystal waterfall where we could cool-off. A man can also go under the waterfall for a massage, it's just a hell of process to come under him as the flow somewhat grudgingly strong. We had delicious cooked. Wednesday was Carli's birthday, for more adventurous could she did not ask. The hotel made for her a nice birthday cake pastry.

Thursday morning, we went to Phi Phi island by ferry, which we then thought to be a 2 hour boat cruise would be degenerate into a five hours trip. With the transfer from the hotel to the port and then by ferry to the main island in Phi Phi, where we again got on another boat and then again later at a small old little boat to our hotel. The Phi Phi Islands consist of a bunch of islands, our hotel Erawan Palms resort was Leamtong Beach, the most northern beach of Phi Phi Island ... No wonder we have such nice trip. The Phi Phi islands are totally the opposite of Phuket's turbulent noise ... here one can have real genuine rest for your soul ... get on the island is literally only three hotels, a few small restaurants, beach-shop and two beach bars. People come here for rest and peace. We then just relax and enjoy going for a wonderful Thai massage, virtually on the beach, while one has a sea view - idyllically, but also a little sore on a roasted red bodice;) That old woman have no mercy! ! Though this hotel is not quite as fancy as the one in Patong, was also a wonderful experience. So we decided on the second day in Phi Phi to go snorkeling, a man in negotiate with the boat drivers before you take them, how long whatever you want to snorkel etc.

So when we decided on about two hours - because it is hot hunks. We were the way to Bamboo Island and Mosquito Island, which convinced many beautiful reefs for snorkeling. We had just arrived at Mosquito Island where the coral-reef is beautiful for snorkeling and as we enter the water it starts to rain. We do not bother us much and we kept on snorkeling. With that it was cloudy, one could not see all the marine life, but the fish was still very beautiful. The next time I saw a flash under the water ... it was counting to five and we are like one man back on our boat. A terrible thunder storm has started and our captain ' said that we can not turn back now, because the sea is to rough and the weather is too heavy. The dunes also become increasingly larger. Mosquito Island is an uninhabited island, so one would have to overcome something, we did not even had drinking water, fortunately we had a few beers for ruff Theron;)

Immediately series like LOST starts even at such times to haunt you. We were all trying to remain calm, but if grudgingly scary ... we sang all Afrikaans songs. About an hour later (which is like an eternity feeling) we asked our skipper when will we be returning to our island. Whether he was tired throwing water out of the boat or simply had enough of our Afrikaans songs I don`t know, but so we then went back. There were large swellings and all that I could think off, is that I do not have the technique like Penny Heyns, Ryk Neethling or not ... so we have quietly put on our life jackets and tuff Theron told that we need to lie on our back when shit hits the fan ... it felt like a never-ending story, till the moment we were approaching our island. It felt as if I could embrace the skipper of joy when we are safe on mother earth.

Saturday we went back to Phuket, Patong beach for our last day in Thailand, before our Sunday departure. After a terrible laugh-out ferry trip, we had one after another got sea sick , I and Anso went to sit infront on the boat's nose, the noise inside was enough for any healthy man grap paper-bag of any size! As we were settle back at our hotel, we hit all the shops for our last shopping spree and bargaining, and we bought a good lot of bargains! Saturday night we have the Phuket fantasy show. What an incredible experience. It was the perfect ending and climax of an unforgettable holiday. They said it was the biggest elephant show in the world, even bigger than the one in Las Vegas ... it was absolutely excellent and so impressive that they could teach the elephants. There was also incredible sky dancers, acrobat's even kids, chickens and a tiger on stage. The Fantasy park is also very nice and let us thought of Goldreef City and Sun City in South Africa, definitely a must for any Phuket holiday!

Sunday my fellow mates went back to SA, after breakfast I said goodbye, I got back to bed and slept until I booked-out at the hotel about 12 hours. Then I went the last time for another turn through the shops and a walk, thereafter I enjoyed the hotel's lounge curled-up with my Sarie magazine my dear mother had packed-in. It was also nice rainy Sunday, and I enjoyed - curled-up reading weather. I also got a lovely SA-parcel from home and because they where four travelers, there was room for lots of interesting sweets (many thanks to you)! It's amazing how many Bovril, kaassmeer, Aromat, Biltong and dry wors in this strange country means! It was a proper measure and fit to get everything back into my suitcases. There is one lesson out of this, ALL that is required for a holiday in Thailand, a costume and comfortable shoes, Sunblock, hat, so two sets of clothes and a pair of clean panties ... that's it! ! And I'm pretty informed beforehand, but where were my ears "? We have permanently only in our bathing costumes and beach-costumes.

On my travel companions: Kapoenka (thank you) for an unforgettable vacation!

To Getaway Africa and Annelie, thousands of thanks for all your arrangements and help with endurance and the plays and changes to our holiday, thank you for your prompt feedback and hands on approaches throughout - it was a truly unforgettable holiday!

Until we talk again next week!

Love greetings
